I have greatly enjoyed reading your thoughts on awareness, competence and confidence, as well as viewing Daniel Kahneman's talk. And while I think I agree with almost everything you suggest, it might be interesting to push this one more step.

We communicate with stories. As you point out, even if we don't make up our own stories, our biases and perspectives certainly color them. As leaders, we also play a major role in scripting the stories for others. It seems important to be choiceful about those stories as well, taking into account both what others will experience and remember. As Professor Kahneman points out, this is especially relevant as we are creating, crafting and managing changes, significant moments and endings.

Great addition, George. Many people in leadership positions seem to, likely through lack of awareness, underplay their role in shaping the perspectives of those they influence. It is an awesome responsibility, many times clumsily executed by individuals who don't realize the impact they have on the lives of those under their authority.

Thanks for your comment, George!
