Detecting and Supporting Informal Leaders

4/18/2010

Most of my work is done with the formal leaders of organizations.  However, as I observe the operations, certain people just seem to catch my attention.  They interact with the other members of their teams as I describe in this week's article, “Detecting and Supporting Informal Leaders.”
Sometimes I'm allowed the privilege of working with these individuals, and it is astounding to see how they blossom.  As they learn why certain things work, they are able to be more intentional about their influence.  And they are able to enhance the capabilities of their teammates, because their influence is real.  The relationships are built on existing trust, and that is very powerful!

Your Middle-Aged Dream May Seem Outrageous

Whether your dream is latent or active, I hope this week's article inspires you to move in the direction of giving it new legitimacy.

Would you pursue your imagination if you knew every resource you'd need was available to you?  Would you pursue your vision of "what could be" if you knew you would not fail?
Grab a piece of paper and a pen, so you can write down at least three ideas that immediately come to mind as you read “Your Middle-Aged Dream May Seem Outrageous.”

Why Do Leaders Need Emotional Intelligence?

4/2/2010

Last week, my article described the four domains of emotional intelligence.  Though the topic has been public knowledge for about fifteen years, I often talk with leaders who either don't understand the concepts or who dismiss the importance of the skills.

I realize this topic has the potential to beneficially improve the abilities of many leaders to influence others.  You be the judge:  “Why Do Leaders Need Emotional Intelligence?”

Since Emotions Drive So Many of Your Decisions...

On initial inspection, everything I read about “Emotional Intelligence” seems so obvious.  Yet why do I (and so many others I observe) mess up so frequently?

My self image is that I'm rational and logical, yet I'm becoming more aware of the power of my emotions as I compare my actual behaviors with what I read.  I'm reflecting on what I do and how I see the situations that lead me to surprising behaviors.

Will you discount your emotions after reading this week’s article?  I hope that “Since Emotions Drive So Many of Your Decisions…” causes you to reflect.
